SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.- --
A healthy bond between the Schriever community, its families and leadership is crucial. Few understand this better than Jessica Schroeder, Schriever’s new Community Support Coordinator.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to join the Schriever team,” said Schroeder. “I can tell it’s a close-knit base.”
The role of Community Support Coordinator was created to respond to the need of a position focused entirely on strengthening base communities.
“There was a need that we needed to build upon overall community cohesion,” said Dr. Ken Robinson, Schriever's Specialist for the Primary Prevention of Violence, reflecting on the days before CSC’s when he worked as a chaplain. “We didn’t really have a strong binding sense of coordination when it came to community support. When the big Air Force introduced the role, it really helped.”
Schroeder acts as a mediator and source of support dedicated to maintaining and improving morale. Her job includes heading the resiliency program, helping train personnel to address stressors in their units and serving as the executive director of the community action information board. The board meets with base leadership to discuss the health of units and what improvements can be made to improve unit cohesion.
“We live and work at an isolated base, which makes the need for a strong community absolutely vital,” said Schroeder.
As with any community outreach effort, addressing families is just as important as helping service members in their work environments.
“Through coordination, we make sure to provide this family support to the fullest capacity,” said Schroeder. “It is absolutely essential to take care of service members’ families, it’s good for morale and allows them to focus on the mission.”
An Air Force veteran, Schroeder commissioned as an officer at the Air Force Academy with a degree in systems engineering management, later returning there for four years as an assistant professor teaching organizational behavior and human resource management.
Schroeder uses these organizational and management skills in her new role, envisioning a future where the vital bonds between Schriever Airmen and the base community are further strengthened.
“I want to continue to address concerns and quality of life issues and strengthen our community connections,” said Schroeder. “To build on the great work we've done with Wingman Day and continue to develop resiliency skills within our base populace to address the unique stressors of military life and working at Schriever.”
Now into a new year, her resolution is to strengthen the Schriever community through her expertise and dedication, looking forward to fulfilling her role for many seasons to come.
“I’ve only worked with her for a few weeks, but I can tell she’s very much a team player,” said Robinson. “She has a passion for the Air Force and its mission.”
