Fire Safety Tip: Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives – Test Yours Every Month

According to the fire prevention office, working smoke alarms can cut the chances of dying in a fire in half. The good news is a smoke alarm is inexpensive protection. Smoke alarms are available at most hardware or discount stores and are easy to install. For good coverage, install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Test them monthly, keep them free of dust and replace the batteries at least once a year. Smoke alarms themselves should be replaced after 10 years of service, or as recommended by the manufacturer. For more information, contact Schriever AFB fire prevention office at 567-3370.
