Airmen learn, grow together

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Thirty Schriever Airmen learned practical leadership lessons during a Total Force Leadership Development program event at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Wednesday, March 23, 2016.

"Total Force Leadership Development consists of specially designed courses that mix commercial leadership tools with Air Force core competencies and core values [and] is offered to enlisted, officer, civilian members and contractors," said Tech. Sgt. Micaela Walker, 50th Space Communications Squadron and program facilitator.

Using John C. Maxwell's award-winning leadership curriculum, "Winning with People," facilitators provided students the opportunity to learn and grow together into a stronger workforce.

"'Winning with People' [teaches] how to build relationships between you and another individual--maybe a boss or peer, maybe it's your spouse at home," said Staff Sgt. Christian Rodgers, 3rd Space Experimentation Squadron and program facilitator. "We've put an Air Force spin on it. We want to be sure people can build relationships and learn to communicate better."

Students agreed the curriculum was enlightening, but also found the group discussion just as beneficial.

"The most rewarding part was there was a lot of dialogue between participants," said Tech. Sgt. Thomas Locke, 50th Space Communications Squadron network operations technician and class participant. "It was a very large group and very diverse--from low ranking to officers. We had more than enough people to have a meaningful discussion."

"Winning with People" topics include perception, self-awareness, self-image, interpersonal relationships and building trust through discussion and scenario-based activities.

"I liked the way the material was presented," said Locke. "I think in general just having the reminder of the importance of relationships [was beneficial] because in the end it isn't about winning arguments or getting your way, it is about working together and making things work."

By hosting courses like this, the TFLD team aims to empower Airmen to be catalysts.

"What I hope people took away from this class is something that resonated with them, and they can take that and share it with others," said Walker.

Classes using John C. Maxwell's curriculum are not offered at every military installation.

"From what I've seen, not every base does this, so it's definitely a privilege for the people here to be able to attend these courses," said Rodgers. "Just looking at the [student] feedback, it really shows that people want more of this and more time learning about these topics. Airmen are craving professional development."

The next course is yet to be decided but is scheduled for June. An email will be distributed once class details are confirmed.

Schriever also facilitates other John C. Maxwell courses including "360 Degree Leadership" and "Power of One." The classes are held quarterly and fill up quickly.

"The professional development seminars hosted by the Total Force Leadership Development team focus on understanding the leadership role we play regardless of rank or position," said Rodgers. "Airmen of all ranks, to include contractors and civilians, would benefit from attending."
