Volunteer Income Tax Assistance representatives needed for 2015 tax season
One of the many benefits military members receive from the legal office is free tax service for all basic tax returns.  The success of this program depends on the quantity and quality of the VITA volunteers commanders make available to support this program.  In previous years, the wing saved Airmen more than $300,000 in filing fees, and the VITA electronic filings resulted in substantial federal tax refunds.

Our goal again this year is to provide our military community the opportunity to obtain electronic tax filing assistance for federal and state returns. In order to meet this goal, we need your help.  Ideally, we would like one qualified VITA for every 50 members in a unit.  Experience has shown that the best VITA volunteers are those who are organized, computer literate and willing to help others.  Comprehensive training with the Internal Revenue Service and Colorado Department of Revenue will be supplemented with Tax Wise computer training.

VITA volunteers must comply with the following requirements:
1.  Attend training from Dec. 8-10, 2015. This is a joint training session for all VITA Reps within the region. (Location pending, will be downtown Colorado Springs)
2. Pass at least minimum testing requirements from training on Tax Wise.
3.  Perform at least 50 duty hours during the tax season.

The start date is tentatively set for Jan. 18, 2016, running through Apr. 15, 2016.
Please submit names and contact information for your VITA volunteers to Tech. Sgt. Trevor Smart no later than Monday.  If you have questions about the program or volunteering, please call Smart at 567-5050 or email him here.
