On October 4, 1957, the USSR achieved what space "first"? On that date, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, the first man-made satellite, into orbit. A month later, on November 3, 1957, the Soviets launched Sputnik II, carrying the canine passenger Laika (Barker), and became the first to launch a biological specimen into space. The U.S. launched its first man-made satellite, Explorer I, on January 31, 1958.
