Base Bulletin - week of Sept. 10

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Subway Food Truck comes to Schriever
A Subway mobile food vender will be on Schriever every Wednesday. Army-Air Force Exchange Service has arranged the truck to be on base from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will leave sooner if they run out of product. The vendor will set up on the north side of the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Building 101. They will feature a limited Subway menu for purchase. 

Fitness Center Floorball (Floor hockey)
The fitness center gymnasium is open for floorball (floor hockey) Thursday evenings from 5 - 6 p.m. All equipment is supplied. If you are interested in participating, contact Senior Airman Jeremy Binz at 719-567-5239 or Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Wander at 719-556-4179.

Toastmasters Club hones leadership, communication skills
Do you want to enhance leadership skills and improve your public speaking abilities? The Schriever Toastmasters Club helps participants develop better speaking and presentation skills, learn to think quickly on their feet and build leadership styles. The club meets from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Tuesday in Building 210, Room 310. Housing offers bible study
The Schriever Housing Family Christian Fellowship will consist of worship, bible study and prayer 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday at Tierra Vista Community Center. Those interested may email the chapel or call 719-567-3705. Dinner will be provided, so bring the family! If you play the guitar or to want to lead worship, contact us ASAP.

AFOSI Islamic state threat briefing
The briefing will provide information on the Islamic State Organization as well as to provide the base populous with information on local threat issues.
Dates:  Tuesday at 10 a.m., Sept. 24 at 2 p.m., Oct. 9 at 10:30 a.m. and Oct. 21 at 9:30 a.m. All briefings will be given inside Building 300 Auditorium.

Schriever hosts September nutrition series
There are several healthy food and nutritional initiatives coming to Schriever for the month of September. Today, Team 5-0 can learn about healthy tailgating options. Instead of tempting yourself with potato chips and hot dogs, come learn about healthy updates to your pre-game favorites. On Sept. 17, learn about seasonal fall foods. What's fresh for fall? Apples, pears, cranberries, sweet potatoes and all kinds of squash.  Get recipes from the best of the autumn harvest. On Sept.24, learn healthy tips for the cold and flu season. Military Retirees Activities Office holds luncheon
The Military Retiree Activities office will be holding a special luncheon today at the Aragon Dining Facility, Building 1160, on Peterson AFB. Please call 719-556-7153 for reservations. After the luncheon, the monthly council meeting will be at 2:30 p.m. in Building 350, room 1206. The guest speaker today is Chaplain (Maj.) Matthew Boarts from the Peterson AFB Chapel. SAFB September 11th Remembrance Ceremony
Schriever AFB will host a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony starting with reveille at 7:30 a.m. at the September 11 tribute on base. This will be followed by a short ceremony to commemorate this important day and the impact it has had on us all. The ceremony will end by 8:30 a.m. to ensure members can board the buses to Ft. Carson for the main event starting at 10:28 a.m.

Ft. Carson holds 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony
All Schriever personnel are invited to attend the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 10:28 a.m., Friday, Sept. 11, at Gate one outside of Fort Carson. Parking is available on base, and carpooling is encouraged. Round trip transportation will be provided to Schriever personnel, but it is limited. Two buses are reserved and will depart Schriever Air Force Base at 9 a.m. Those interested in taking the bus should contact 2nd Lt. David Mulqueen or 2nd Lt. Kenneth Mackenthun. The uniform for the ceremony is service dress for active duty, and coat and tie for civilians.

11 SWS hosts September 11th blood drive
In remembrance of September 11th and in honor of Patriot's Day, the 11th Space Warning Squadron is hosting a blood drive with the St. Francis Blood Bank Friday.  The bloodmobile will be on Schriever AFB from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will be parked between Building 210 and the ENT Bank.  Everyone is encouraged to come out and donate. 21/50 SW Air Force football tailgate
The 21st and 50th Space Wings will be hosting a tailgate for all associated personnel and their families for the Air Force vs. San Jose State football game at 4 p.m. on Sep. 12 at Falcon Stadium. There will be free food and drinks as well games and a dessert competition. The tailgate will be located in the northwest corner of parking area #4, space 7. Please contact 2nd Lt. Schriever AFB POW/MIA remembrance week
Sept. 14th marks the start of the remembrance week for prisoners of war and those still missing in action at Schriever Air Force Base. It's a day here in the United States where we remember those who were or are held in captivity as well as those who remain so today. There are more than 83,000 Americans still unaccounted for from previous wars. The purpose of POW/MIA Remembrance Week is to take time and remember the sacrifices made by those who were held prisoners of war.

An opening ceremony will kick off at 9:30 a.m. Sept.14 in the Building 210 atrium. There will also be a closing ceremony at 9 a.m. Sept. 17 in the Building 210 atrium. A 24-hour run to remember will begin the same day at 10 a.m. as soon as the closing ceremony finishes in front of the gym. The run will conclude on Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. Immediately following the run, the Air Force birthday cake will be cut at the Dish at 11 a.m. For more information regarding the event, or if interested in participating in the run to remember, please contact Senior Airman Ivan Aguirre at 719-567-5167.

Society opens door to military widows
The Society of Military Widows is open to widows of any branch of military service, regardless of the spouse's rank. The Pikes Peak Chapter 15 of the Society of Military Widows meets at 10:30 a.m. on the last Wednesday of the month at the Peterson Air Force Base Club. On Thursday, Sept. 17, they will be celebrating their 35th anniversary. There will be a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the Olive Garden at Citadel Crossing. Civilian Progress Reviews
As a reminder to all supervisors of civilian employees, progress reviews should be accomplished by the end of September for all civilian personnel. Please use AF Form 860B to document this review. A copy of the form must be provided to the employee and the original retained by the supervisor and kept in the 971 folder.  Please download the most recent version of AF Form 860B from e-Pubs: http://www.e-publishing.af.mil/

"I am SCHRIEVER" to highlight military children
Does your son or daughter have an amazing talent, skill or hobby? Are they an excellent example of resilience? Maybe they've moved multiple times, as many military children do? Public Affairs is looking for children of personnel assigned to Schriever to highlight for our "I am SCHRIEVER" campaign. If you or your child is interested in being featured, send an e-mail to the PA Workflow with your name, your child's name and why they should be highlighted for a chance to be featured in the month of November. Dry Cleaning Express service available
The dry cleaning drop box at the Schriever Shoppette is available.  Drop off for Mondays are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and pick up is on Thursday any time after 3 p.m.  Drop off for Thursdays are 6 a.m. to 2.p.m. and pick up is on Monday any time after 3 p.m. The concessionaire will pick up and drop off between 2 to 2:30 p.m. both days.

Save Gas Money - ride a Vanpool-Falcon
Did you know the government provides $130 per ride, per month to pay for commuter vans? Department of Defense civilians and uniformed military personnel are eligible. Transportation originates from the Falcon Wal-Mart located on Woodmen and Meridian Market View Road. The van departs weekdays at 6:25 a.m. and arrives at Schriever Air Force Base at 6:55 a.m. At the end of the duty day, the van departs from Schriever Air Force Base at 4:10 p.m. and arrives at Falcon Wal-Mart at 4:40 p.m. Drop off and pick up points on Schriever Air Force Base may vary. Fire Prevention Week
Fire prevention week is from Oct. 4 - 10. Protect your family from fire with these tips:
1. Install Smoke Alarms on each level of your home, outside each sleeping area and inside each bedroom. 
2. Install Carbon Monoxide Alarms on each level of your home and outside sleeping areas (within 15 ft.) 3. Post Emergency Numbers (Fire/Police; Poison Control; Utilities: Water/Gas/Electric). 
4. Know where your emergency shut-offs are (Gas/Water/Electric)
5. Have a multipurpose fire extinguisher inside your home; keep a safe distance from your stove for access.
6. Have an escape plan: two ways out/Meeting Point.

Crime Prevention tip
When observing an aggressive driver who is putting other motorists at risk, pull over to the side of the road to utilize your cellular device while on the installation or hands-free device and contact local Security Forces, Colorado Highway Patrol or El Paso County as soon as possible. Be prepared to provide the following information:  vehicle description, license plate number, location and direction of travel, driver description and the aggressive driving behavior being demonstrated.  Contact Schriever Crime Stoppers at 719-567-5643, Colorado Highway Patrol at (*277) or El Paso County Sheriff's Department at 719-390-5555.
