SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- "Ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man," said John F. Kennedy during his inaugural address to the American public Jan. 20, 1961.
This point was to encourage more selfless actions and for others to ask themselves how they could make a change, as well as to deliver a highly impactful speech after taking office as the 35th president of the United States.
That same theme of "Selflessness," which Kennedy used, is still applicable today, and will be the theme for the next TEDxSchriever event 1 to 4 p.m. May 15 in the Building 300 auditorium.
With this, James Hodges, 50th Space Wing Public Affairs community outreach, and Stacy Cochran, a TEDxSchriever team volunteer, want Team Schriever to start thinking about selflessness.
"As an organization and a military one at that, we deal with selflessness on a day-to-day basis," said Cochran.
Hodges said most individuals don't see their actions as being selfless. He hopes through TEDxSchriever, people will start thinking about the meaning of selflessness.
"We hope everyone who attends will take away inspiration and ideas to their workplace and homes," he said. "We want to share something new and exciting, and hopefully, help them see something in a different light."
Hodges said this year TEDx will have more to offer than last year's initial event. He added now that they have a TEDx under their belt, they look forward to making this one better.
"There will be expanded speakers, and events leading up to TEDxSchriever including a photography contest," he added. "Last year's event was a learning experience for everyone involved."
He added they are now able to better prepare for this one.
For those not familiar with TED, there will be get-to-know TED events held Feb. 18, March 13 and April 17 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Building 300 auditorium. Members are encouraged to bring lunch and come and be inspired.
"Being part of a movement like TEDx is inspiring," said Cochran. "To realize that a talk you help share can effect change somewhere in the world is amazing."
About TEDx, x = independently organized event in the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
