BONUS: Where was President Truman when he signed the act? While a number of elements of the National Security Act of 1947, including the establishment of the Air Force were effective Sept. 18, 1947, the Act became law when signed by President Truman July 26, 1947. Truman signed the act aboard his presidential aircraft, Sacred Cow.
