50 SW Chaplain office offers retreats for families

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The 50th Space Wing Chapel's office offered a weekend family retreat to 27 families July 25-27 at the Omni Interlocken Resort in Broomfield, Colorado, July 25-27.

The family retreat was designed to offer members a weekend getaway to focus on their marriage and family. The retreat offered seminars on topics, such as communication, and provided childcare to 10 children.

Staff Sgt. Marcela Parker, 50 SW chaplain's assistant, registered members for the retreat and due to high demand placed an additional 25 on a waiting list.

"The retreats are popular, especially to our families who sometimes just need to re-charge," said Parker. "The family retreats provide couples with children time to learn new tools to better their relationship."

Parker said the chapel tries to offer as many seminars and retreats as possible but funding is always a determining factor.

"The retreats are free to the members, they just have to provide their own transportation to the location," said Parker. "Unfortunately, because of this we can only offer so many throughout the year."

And one of the attendees, Lt. Col. Edward Peters, Air Force Space Command, said he and his family really enjoyed the retreat.

"The venue for the conference was excellent and it was very relaxing," said Peters. "We learned some great techniques such as how to better present problems to our spouse."

Peters said while at the conference, he participated in presentations and interactive seminars, which he was able to directly apply to his marriage.

"Some of the topics covered were personality types, effective communication, ways to have more fun and how to increase passion in the marriage," he said. "I was most surprised to learn that marriage-conference participants rate the happiness in their marriage an average 8.5 out of 10."

Peters added that he will be one of the first people to sign up for the next marriage conference that becomes available
.
The 50 SW chaplain's office is hosting a Single Parent Retreat Aug. 22- 24 and there are still slots available. For more information about upcoming retreats or seminars, please contact the chaplain's office at 567-3705.
