Fitness month brings something different for Team Schriever

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- May has traditionally been recognized as fitness month for the Air Force.
Seth Cannello, Schriever sports and fitness manager, recalls that the Air Force even garnered a national sponsor for the month just a few years ago. But for whatever reason, participation and recognition has waned at Schriever during the past few years.
Hoping to revive the idea locally, Cannello and the Schriever Fitness Center staff have planned events for May.
The fitness month will begin May 2 with the Schriever AFB Combine, which includes 12 fitness-related events. The combine will feature all of the events conducted at the NFL combine, such as the 40-yard dash, the bench press and the vertical jump, allowing Schriever participants to compare their performance to some of their favorite players. It provides a grueling test.
"We have some kind of event going on every Wednesday and Friday except down days and holidays," Cannello said. "And, all but one of the events, the Zumbathon, were devised by the fitness center staff."
"These workouts are routines or regimens that fitness center staff have typically performed themselves," Cannello said. "For instance, I submitted a workout that I started doing recently. It requires participants to row for 5,000 meters, flip a giant tractor tire for 115 feet and finish by carrying 80-pound dumbbells 115 feet. It's pretty grueling."
Ed Molloy, Schriever Sports director, submitted an event that requires competitors to perform 10 shuttle runs, 20 box jumps, 20 v-sit-ups, 10 lateral jumps, 20 bosu pushups and 20 body squats with 180-degree spins.
"The idea is to provide people with something they haven't done before," Molloy said. "It should be a lot of fun to watch. Those of us who do the routines regularly know how grueling they can be, but watching other people do them will give us something to compare our efforts to."
Cannello set up the competitions as timed events as a means for comparing performance. And, he attempted to throw in as many different routines as the staff could think of.
The "Cinco de Mayo," workout on May 5, for example, is heavy on weight training, whereas the Hack, on May 30, emphasizes repetitive endurance.
The Schriever combine will take place at the football field, weather permitting, and all other events will be held at either the fitness center or the indoor running track. May 5, The Cinco de Mayo Workout from 9 a.m. to noon in the indoor running track
May 7, 40/40 TRX challenge 9 a.m. to noon in the basketball court
May 8, Zumbathon from 2 to 4 p.m. in the basketball court (not a competition)
May 9, The Murph from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. in IRT
May 12, The Cannello from 9 a.m. to noon in IRT
May 14, Wing Run from 2:45 to 4 p.m. around base trail
May 16, 9th Annual Schriever Half Marathon
May 19, The Outlaw from 9 a.m. to noon in the IRT
May 21, The Schuette, aka "The Shoot Me Now" 9 a.m. to noon
May 28, The Molloy from 9 a.m. to noon in basketball court
May 30, The Hack from 9 a.m. to noon in the IRT

Competitors will also earn commander's cup points for their unit for participation and placing.
