50 FSS holds Spring Fling

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The 50th Force Support Squadron is hosting a Once Upon a Time Children's Spring Fling 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 12 at the Schriever Fitness Center.

"Spring Fling is an opportunity to give to the community of Schriever Air Force Base with a variety of fun events, prizes and free food," said Mary Barkley, Airman and Family Services Flight chief. "This year, we are doing a story book theme with the emphasis on the Wizard of Oz."

The 13th annual event is open to children and family members of active-duty personnel, Department of Defense and non-appropriated fund civilians, contractors and retired military working on Schriever.

"We are encouraging the kids who are attending to dress up in their favorite story book character," Barkley said. "We also want Schriever families to come out. It's a lot of fun and it's free."

The festivities will feature a petting zoo, pony rides, balloon art, bounce houses, face painting, games and complimentary lunch. Participating children will also receive an opportunity to win prizes. Hairy the Bunny and his fairytale friends will also join the celebration.

The whole event, including games and prizes, is paid for by outside community partners through the Air Force Commercial Sponsorship Program. The purpose of the commercial sponsorship program is to help offset the cost of the event and enhance the event.

"Without the support of our sponsors, our events would have limited funding and we would not be able to offer such an amazing opportunity to show our Airman how much we appreciate everything they do day in and day out," said Darcie Ibidapo, 50 FSS advertising and commercial sponsorship manager. "At Schriever, we are very fortunate to have such great support from the local community; and every year we have more and more sponsors who want to get involved with the Schriever community."

Additionally, 50 FSS receives support from Schriever volunteers who give their time to make sure the Spring Fling is a success. Currently, 50 FSS is still looking for approximately 40 volunteers for the set up and tear down of the event as well as other duties.

"Most of the booths and activities are going to be run by the volunteers," Barkley said. "They are essential to the success of the event."

People interested in volunteering should contact 2nd Lt. Ryan Corl, volunteer coordinator, at 567-2754. For more information about Spring Fling, call 567-4740.
