SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Last week's answer:
On Jan. 15, 1941, this organization, which would later become a component of the 50th Fighter Wing, first activated at Selfridge Field, Mich. The 50th Pursuit Group (Interceptor) activated on that date. Following World War II, the organization was renamed and activated as the 50th Fighter Group in 1949 and assigned to the 50th Fighter Wing. On Jan. 30, 1992, the group was renamed 50th Operations Group and activated as a component of the 50th Space Wing (previously the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing).
This week's question:
On Jan. 5, 1917, the Smithsonian Institution gave this space pioneer a $5,000 grant to develop a rocket for high-altitude atmospheric measurements.
