Chief's Corner - week of April 21

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Can you spare a few dollars?

We've all been there when life's unexpected turns catch us in a problem we weren't financially ready for, such as car repairs, emergency room visits or maybe even the death of a loved one.  When the unexpected visits, it's nice to know we can depend on our family to be there to help us through tough times.

No, I'm not talking about a loan from mom or dad, or even a GoFundMe page.  I'm referring to our Air Force family and the aid provided by the charities of the Air Force Assistance Fund.  Four worthwhile charities get their funding through AFAF contributions.  The largest, the Air Force Aid Society, provides emergency assistance, educational scholarships and community programs to all Airmen, and in 2015, they helped 57,000 of us with $16 million in direct support.  The second charity, the Air Force Villages, provides in-resident care for retired Air Force officers' widowed spouses who need financial or healthcare assistance.  The third charity, The LeMay Foundation, similarly awards grants to enlisted and officer retirees' surviving spouses so they may continue to live a dignified lifestyle, whether by supplementing monthly income, covering home repair or healthcare costs or simply giving a gift card for extra food during the holidays.  The final charity AFAF supports is the Air Force Enlisted Village.  The village provides a safe, comfortable home to thousands of military widows so they may live out their days in a dignified, caring community.  All four charities are there for us in our greatest time of need.

The Air Force Assistance Fund is for Airmen by Airmen.  Donating even a small amount is one way we can ensure that we never leave an Airman behind.  Can you spare a few dollars toward that peace of mind for every Airman, whenever they may need help?  There are still a few days left in the 2016 campaign period.  Please visit www.afassistancefund.org for more information and consider making a donation today.
