SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Three years ago, in an effort to increase camaraderie, team building and esprit de corps among the Air Force Space Command Front Range installations, Schriever, Peterson and Buckley Air Force Bases created the Tri-Wing Sports Day. The event pits teams from each installation against each other in a friendly competition to determine which installation will earn athletic bragging rights.

The third annual Tri-Wing Sports Day will be held at Schriever Aug. 5, and the day-long event is in need of volunteers.

"This is a really big event," said Seth Cannello, Schriever Fitness Center director. "It's like having a full year's worth of activities in one day. We can't do it all by ourselves."

At least 51 volunteers are needed to adequately man the 16 events held throughout the day. Most of the volunteers will be manning stations for the individual race events, 5K run (7), mountain bike race (8), relay races (8) and the Murph competition (6).

"We rely on volunteers for our monthly fitness events," Cannello said. "I'll never turn away a volunteer."

Volunteers will be in charge of their assigned event from start to finish, including charting final scores.

According to the Tri-Wing Sports Day Information Packet, "Military, civilian, contract employees and family members over 16 are eligible (to participate)."

Cannello added he will hold meetings with event volunteers to go over details of each event, to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Those interested in volunteering for the Murph, mountain bike race, 5K run, horseshoes and cornhole could also have the opportunity to gain experience running those events prior to the TWSD.

"Volunteers (for those events) can help with the Murph and duathlon when we hold those events," Cannello said. "We'll have tournaments during the base picnic for cornhole and horseshoes and I'll have them run those events to gain experience as well."

All volunteers need to be registered by July 1 and Cannello said the sooner people notify him of their intention to volunteer, the better.

Airman 1st Class Krystal Conkling has already volunteered to help with the event.

"The reason why I wanted to volunteer is because I love getting involved with the base anyway I can," she said.

Conkling will be one of the volunteers working the Murph.

"I have done the Murph at least once per year, and this year I will be doing it two separate times," she said. "I figured it would be a great event for me to volunteer for and help push other Airmen."

Many of the event participants have already been decided. The Schriever varsity softball and soccer teams, as well as the intramural volleyball, basketball and flag football championship teams, will represent the base in their respective events. The winners of the recent dodgeball tournament, and upcoming Murph challenge will compete as well.

Those interested in participating in one of the other events (full list below) should notify Cannello as soon as possible.

"Members must be assigned to each respective base in order to compete," the Information Packet says. "The status of the employee (duty, leave, etc.) is determined by policy of the wing where the individual is assigned. Contractors must be in leave status."
